Agriculture species are declining more than woodland species.
Pesticides, toxic chemical and heavy metals such as lead and mercury cause significant
bird mortality and reduce breeding success. The use of poisons to
control pests or for persecuting predators is a sad relict and great threatened to birds. The US applies approximately five billion pounds of pesticides
annually. A Pesticides poisoning database documents more than 2,500 incidents
including 113 pesticides implicated in the death of more than 400,000 birds. Carbofuran
has been responsible for more than 20% of all incidents and the death of more than
40,000 birds. Increase and decrease of land during cultivation
influences the avian habitat degradation rate.
The farmers are often converted unproductive land into intensive production to
get more profitable crops such as vegetables, olives or vineyards which leave little space
for the original diversity of organisms living in the typical traditional farm mosaic with
increased use of agrochemicals and complete shift of crops and land uses.
Locate barns and other infrastructure along the edges of fields to minimize habitat
fragmentation. According to conservative estimated 25 million of the
number of native birds killed by predators each year. Threatened species population as
well as other native forest dwellers in the targeted host spots needs protection from
predators. The captures of wild birds as pets are serious
threats to birds.
